168 ) - Unable to afford a laptop for school.

My name is Jasmine Brisco. I am 16 years old. I live with my Grandmother and my Stepgrandfather. They took custody of my brother and I when we were born. That is something I thank them for every day. My mother and father were not able to care me because, my mother has Cerbal Palsy and my father had a bad drug addiction. I don't really get to see them much though. The reason why I wish I had a laptop is I want this for school, not personal or materialisic reasons. My grandmother has always provided every thing I needed in life but, this is the only thing that she or my family can't afford. I always cry because I wish I had some thing special like this in my life. My grandmother has tried to purchase me a laptop for me to work alone on school projects for exactly three years. She still doesn't have the income to provide me with a laptop. She promised me that on my 14th birthday that she would try to get a loan from a bank to buy me a laptop. Unfortunetly, I never got one because, my grandmother was unable to get a bank loan. That was saddest day of both of our lives, I didn't get a laptop, and she couldn't get a bank loan for an gifts for my birthday. That was one of the most dramatic birthdays I ever had. On all of my birthdays I got things that I wanted like, Barbies, clothes, and an Easy Bake Oven. On my birthday I cried to my grandmother and asked her why she couldn't buy me a laptop, she said to me, "Jasmine, I am unable to afford a laptop for your school needs". After that, I was just so crushed, and so was my grandmother. Ever since then, she has felt bad about herself. I always try to cheer her up about it though. My grandmother has had six different back surgeries which caused even more stress upon her. I still need a laptop for important school work and projects but, we can't afford a laptop for school. I entered tons of contest and saved tons of money,but, I still can't a laptop for school. I going to enter my junior year of highschool in September of 2005. There are a lot of assignments that I know I will need to study for like, SAT, ACT, quizes, term papers, essays,and classroom assignments. We don't have a computer at home and no one else wants. I don't want a laptop for personal reasons, I need a laptop for important reasons.

166 ) - Pregnant teacher

Thirty-four year old Nubia Thompson never thought eighth period would end. An art teacher in the "alternative" program at a large urban high school, Nubia was in her seventh month of pregnancy. School started at 7:15 AM and teachers were expected to teach at least 5 classes and one study hall. It was a difficult schedule and Nubia's pregnancy was exhausting.

Today, the bell caught her unawares because she was trying to head off a fight between two girls who had just discovered they shared a boyfriend. As a result, the classroom emptied before Nubia realized that the students had left their supplies and projects scattered about. Luckily, they were using pastels and paper this unit. She wouldn't have to worry about breathing in turpentine fumes in order to wash out brushes.

Still, it took Nubia nearly twenty minutes to sort and pack away the soft pastels. She groaned as she straightened her aching back and was surprised to find a student standing in the back doorway of the classroom.

"Oh, hi, Hermilio," she stammered. "Did you leave something?"

The sullen-looking youth shook his head. Hermilio was nearly 19 years old, but he had barely enough credits to count for sophomore status. He couldn't drop out of school because he was on probation for several petty crimes committed during daytime hours when he was 14 and 15. The judge's solution was to keep him in school until age 21 or graduation --whichever came first.

Nubia disliked Hermilio. He was rude and seldom did any work. Worse, he sexually harassed female classmates. Nubia even suspected that he made fun of her pregnancy-related figure changes. Her breasts were as enormous as melons and her rear end was even more generous than before. She felt uncomfortable with Hermilio being alone in the classroom with her.

Nubia had grown up in a tough Chicago neighborhood and she knew that students sometimes assaulted teachers. She wasn't sure that her advanced state of pregnancy would help save her if Hermilio decided to rape her. She started edging closer to the front doorway of the class where the call button was located.

"Well, how can I help you?"

"I was thinkin' I could help you. I mean we could help each other." The young man looked sheepish.

"Huh?" Nubia exclaimed.

"I see you struggling with boxes after school. And I was wondering if you could help me pass art if I helped you carry them boxes. I gotta pass art so I can graduate. My uncle says he'll hire me in his shop once I'm out of school."

Nubia was stunned. She didn't realize that anyone had seen her leave the school at 5 PM or later, carrying boxes out to her car. She had been teaching at the school for 10 years and had amassed a lot of personal effects. Since she was quiting when the baby was born, she decided to take everything home before her maternity leave. She really could use the help. Except, she couldn't promise that Hermilio would pass art simply because he was helping her.

"I'd like that Hermilio, but it won't be easy. You never do any work in class. That has to change."

Hermilio agreed. Within days, Nubia realized that Hermilio had a natural talent for art. She began to enjoy tutoring him after school and watching his skills develop. By the end of the marking period, Hermilio had a B in art. As Nubia prepared to teach the last class before leaving for maternity leave, Hermilio handed her a small package. Opening it, she found a little painting of nursery rhyme characters. Touched, she realized that the real gift was her role in Hermilio's changes.
