ANNETTE KLEINBARD (aka Carol Connors)

Email Visit author - scorpio november 13

Born 13 November 1940, New Brunswick, New Jersey

In his biography of Phil Spector ("He's a Rebel", 1989), Mark Ribowsky describes Annette Kleinbard as "a shy, cherubic brunette, tiny as a buttercup". Early in 1958, she met Phil Spector, who was dating her girlfriend Donna Kass at that time. Phil was more than interested in Annette's soprano singing voice. He asked her to sing on a session (on May 20, 1958) that he had prepared, at Gold Star Studio in Los Angeles. So much time was spent on a song called "Don't You Worry My Little Pet", that there was no studio time left for any other songs. The as-yet unnamed group consisted of Spector, Kleinbard, Marshall Leib (often misspelled as Lieb ; he died in March 2002) and Harvey Goldstein. The master was sold to Lou Bedell of Dore Records, but it still needed a B-side. By the time "To Know Him Is To Love Him" was recorded (with Sandy Nelson on drums), the group had decided on a name, The Teddy Bears, and lost a member, Harvey Goldstein. Annette's lead was remarkable, a little girl hurting with real pain. "Don't You Worry My Little Pet" was released as the A-side, but got preciously little airplay. Instead, deejays started playing the other side. The week of September 22, 1958, "To Know Him Is To Love Him" hit the Billboard chart at # 88. It took ten weeks to rise to number one. The Teddy Bears performed on American Bandstand and on the Perry Como Show. They had further releases on Imperial in 1959. Both sides of "Oh Why"/"I Don't Need You Anymore" charted, but peaked no higher than # 91 and # 98 respectively. The group disbanded at the end of 1959, crippled by internal strife and also as a result of a serious car accident : in early September 1959, Annette lost control of her MG convertible, tumbled down a mountainside and into a ditch. She was pulled from the wreckage. Her face was ravaged, her nose almost completely sheared off. For weeks she lay in a bed at the UCLA Medical Center as doctors reconstructed her features. She required four operations. When she was well enough to receive guests, Phil Spector was not among the bedside visitors. "Too bad she didn't die", was his comment.

In the sixties, Annette returned to the music scene as a songwriter, now calling herself Carol Connors. She had come to hate the name Annette because of Annette Funicello. Her first hit was "Hey Little Cobra" by the Rip Chords (# 4 in early 1964) and she went on to write many hot rod songs, some of which were used in beach movies. She really hit the big time in July 1977, when the theme from the first "Rocky" film, "Gonna Fly Now" went all the way to # 1 in the version by Bill Conti, who co-wrote the song. Annette wrote the lyrics ; the released version contained only 30 words. Her third big hit came in 1979, when she co-wrote "With You I'm Born Again" for Billy Preston and Syreeta (# 4).

ANITA KERR

ANITA KERR
Born Anita Jean Grilli, 31 October 1927, Memphis, Tennessee

After rock & roll set back country record sales, the major Nashville producers - Owen Bradley (Decca), Don Law (Columbia), Ken Nelson (Capitol) and, most of all, Chet Atkins (RCA) - became intent on making country records more appealing to pop audiences. They began to produce singers backed by neutral rhythm sections and vocal choruses instead of the traditional fiddles, banjos and steel guitars. A major figure in the creation in this style, later known as the Nashville Sound, was Anita Kerr, an influential vocal and instrumental arranger. Her group, the Anita Kerr Singers, became a staple on countless recordings, helping to considerably broaden country music's market. Kerr took piano lessons from the age of four and she was soon appearing on her mother's radio show in Memphis. By the age of 14, she was the staff pianist and was making vocal arrangements of church music for the station. In 1949, she formed the Anita Kerr Quartet with Gil Wright (tenor), Dorothy Ann "Dottie" Dillard (alto) and Louis Nunley (baritone) ; Kerr herself sang soprano. Two years later they signed to Decca Records and established themselves as session singers, particularly in Nashville. By the early 60s, the quartet were featured on, it is estimated or alleged, a quarter of all the country records being made in Nashville, including records by Eddy Arnold, Floyd Cramer, Jim Reeves, Hank Snow and Don Gibson, as well as pop records by Brook Benton, Perry Como, Connie Francis, Brenda Lee and Roy Orbison. Starting in 1961, Kerr became Chet Atkins's recording assistant at RCA sessions, working as vocal group leader, arranger, and occasional producer, her most successful production being "The End of the World" by Skeeter Davis. The Anita Kerr Quartet recorded on its own as well at times under other names. As the Little Dippers, they scored a # 9 pop hit in March 1960 with the Buddy Killen composition "Forever", which also gave Pete Drake his only hit (1964). As Anita & th'So-And-Sos, they had another minor hit with "Joey Baby" in 1962. In the mid-60s, the Anita Kerr Quartet made several easy-listening albums, two of which (We Dig Mancini and South- land Favorites) won Grammy awards (in the Best Vocal Group and Gospel categories, respectively). Having established a new direction, Kerr relocated to Hollywood and created the Anita Kerr Singers, featuring Jackie Ward or B.J. Baker (sopranos), Gene Merlino (tenor), and Bob Tedow (bass). Signing to Warner Brothers Records, the new outfit recorded compellingly strange easy-listening music, several of which were released under the Mexicali Singers moniker. They also accompanied Rod McKuen on his bestselling poetry albums under the San Sebastian Strings moniker, and appeared on the Smothers Brothers comedy sketch program. After a short spell at Dot Records, Kerr returned to Nashville and concentrated on the Christian music scene.

Discovery of a collision orbit

Email Visit author - prediction man

The Earth orbits the Sun in a sort of cosmic shooting gallery. It is subject to impacts from comets and asteroids. While the primary source of these objects is the main asteroid belt, there are minor planets until wide outside the Kuiper belt, where detection and observation is difficult. While the knowledge of the inner and outer neighborhood of the solar system has grown [4] so does our awareness of danger. Eight years ago, routine computations have shown that one of the minor planets which shoots through the solar system in an abnormal eccentric orbit has a chance of hitting the Earth in the year 2098. Since then, Earth and space based radar and optical telescopes have determined accurately the location, the speed and the shape of this asteroid. Simulations on the worldwide network of supercomputers (WWNS) found a positive Lyapunov exponent for the orbit, a sign for chaos. The scientists became alarmed, when Monte Carlo simulations predicted a substantial chance of an impact with Earth on the northern hemisphere. The reason for the uncertainty is in that the impact angle is in the critical range, where also reflection is possible.

Scorpio Net UK

Where the level of your enjoyment is only limited by the power of your imagination

ScorpioNet UK organise adult parties all over the UK, mainly in the London area but very occasionally elsewhere around the country. We are a private members' club and you do have to be a member to attend. The parties themselves are always held in exclusive rented apartments. When you come in we introduce you around and make sure that you're making new friends straight away. A free buffet is provided and drinks are available.

There will always be some people (usually long-standing members) who will give a little "floorshow" to get people in the mood and we show good adult movies and play excellent music. Around the house during the course of the evening there are different themes going on. They include group, bi, S&M, fantasy, fetish, one-on-one and watersports. The idea is that you have a look around, you can join in where you want to or watch. It's entirely up to you.
