But how many of us would go so far as to say, unprompted, that health is the optimization of all our physical and psychological attributes as people?

Far fewer than many people hold this last view of health, we have found by experience, without first being motivated to learn and given the opportunity to reflect on the phenomenon that is our health. Creating such opportunities for reflection and learning is of course HumanaNatura's primary mission.

The unfortunate truth is that we know far more about disease and disease management today than we do about the more fundamental topic of our health, reflecting the enormous modern investment in medicine and the urgent attention our health receives when we are most in danger of losing it. Imagine the potential of proactively focusing a portion of this investment on the basic question of health optimization, potentially eradicating a whole host of diseases and raising human living standards all at once.

Continuing our survey of the modern landscape, we can also see that the subject of our health is still a matter of obvious indifference to many people today. Almost everywhere we look, we see patently unhealthy behaviors. We see irrational preoccupations perpetuated and even promoted by people. We see health-impairing, life-shortening, and even joy-reducing lifestyles nearly everywhere we look.

From these observations, we might well conclude that the essential nature of our health is still generally misunderstood, and that the far-reaching impacts of diminished health on the quality and potential of our lives remains greatly under-appreciated. The reasons for this misunderstanding and under-appreciation are of course rooted in our human history, and in the structure and values of our society today, which are themselves products of our history.

To test this conclusion for yourself, compare the major outlines of our human history, or even the life histories of the people you know, against the standard of a sustained quest for optimal health. From this perspective, you may see our current of health, and attitudes about health, in a new light. Reaching this new perspective on health in our society, and realizing our potential for much greater levels of health, is the first milestone of the HumanaNatura program.
