- As a lineage, scorpions are very old, indeed. The earliest fossil scorpions turn up in rocks formed in the lower Silurian Period, over 420 million years ago. That's about 200 million years before the dinosaurs appeared. These earliest scorpion fossils are similar in many ways to the now-extinct eurypterids (also called giant water scorpions) from which they are thought to have descended. In fact, it would be perfectly correct to refer to scorpions today as eurypterids. Ancient scorpions had large, compound eyes, an extra pair of book lungs, poorly developed preoral chamber, and legs that were not yet specialized for walking on land. Unfortunately, we know very little about these ancient scorpions. How they lived, what they ate, etc. In fact, there is considerable debate over whether they lived on land or in the water. A few of these fossil scorpions may have reached a total length of nearly 1 meter. Those of you who live in scorpion country and have found them in your homes can imagine how exciting it would be to discover a toddler-sized scorpion hiding behind your washing machine!
- The lineage that modern scorpions belong to first appeared in the late Carboniferous Period, about 300 million years ago. They have changed little since that time.

- People often ask how long their pet scorpion can be expected to live. That depends on what species of scorpion you have and how old it was when you acquired it. The most common pet scorpion is Pandinus imperator, the emperor scorpion. They typically require about 3 years to reach adulthood. They may then live an additional 1 to 3 years as adults depending upon a great variety of factors. Most emperors are sold as adults, so they already have at least half of their lifespan behind them. I consider it normal to get an additional year of life out of your pets. I would consider you very fortunate to get an additional two years of life. Mythic Origins. Within a mythological context there is much that can be understood about the Scorpio personality. Look towards the constellation Scorpius, and you shall see one of the greatest stars visible to the human eye. There, at the very heart of the great scorpion is brilliant Antares! This red giant, some four hundred times larger than our own sun, rivals even close Mars for the eye's attention. - Scorpions fluoresce under UV light (also known as "blacklight"). Longwave ultraviolet light is reflected as visible light in the green range. In darkness, the scorpions appear to glow. Under direct sunlight, the fluorescence may impart a greenish tint to the scorpion's color.
The fluorescence is caused by an unidentified substance in a very thin layer in the cuticle of the scorpion called the hyaline layer. Newly molted scorpions do not fluoresce. As the new cuticle hardens, the fluorescent quality increases. This indicates that the fluorescent factor is either secreted by the scorpion shortly after molting or that the fluorescence is a by-product of the tanning process.
Alcohol in which scorpions have been preserved may also fluoresce.
The hyaline layer of the cuticle is very tough stuff. It is often found in scorpion fossils. Even after hundreds of millions of years, while all the other layers of the cuticle have been lost, this hyaline layer remains embedded in fossil rocks. And yes, it still fluoresces.
Nobody knows the function of the hyaline cuticle or its strange fluorescence. Some have suggested that it serves as UV sensor (all scorpions are basically nocturnal and shun the light).
This unusual feature can make scorpions easier to collect and observe. When darkness falls, portable UV lights can be carried into the field where scorpions live. Scorpions caught in the nearly invisible UV light glow an eerie greenish color, making them easy to spot in the darkness.

Scorpions are creatures, which crawl along the ground, seeking out the hidden spaces. They are a mystery to humanity, shrouded in fear and misunderstanding. Left to there own devices, they are comfortable in the low-lying realms of the world. If provoked, however, they will strike with a deadly vengeance. The Eagle soars. On great wings this ruler of the wind rises above earthbound limitations. From this lofty perspective, the Eagle sees a world others may never dream. The bird of prey also strikes a swift and deadly blow. Yet, unlike the Scorpion, the Eagle has the ability to soar beyond. Within the spirit of every Scorpio resides this dual nature.
- The sting or stinger, also called a telson, is located at the very end of the postabdomen of the scorpion. The base of the sting, or vesicle, is globular and tapers posteriorly to a very narrow, curved spine called the aculeus. The vesicle contains a pair of glandular sacs that produce and store the various components of the scorpion's venom. The aculeus is like a hypodermic needle. It is hollow and very, very sharp. There is a pair of openings near the tip from which the venom is delivered. Each venom sac is connected to one of the openings by a venom duct. The venom sacs are controlled voluntarily so the scorpion can regulate how much venom is injected with each sting. Some scorpions don't inject any venom when stinging.
- Scorpions use their sting for a variety of purposes. The most obvious use of the sting is in prey capture. Prey is first grasped firmly with the pincers. For many scorpions, nothing more is required to subdue the prey for external digestion. Prey that cannot be killed by simply crushing with the pincers is usually stung one or more times. By using their venom, small scorpions with weak pincers can bring down prey as large as themselves.
- A second use of the sting is in defense. A well-placed sting serves to ward off many would-be predators. I once placed an adult Centruroides vittatus into the terrarium of an unidentified solpugid fully intending for the solpugid to eat the scorpion. The solpugid attacked immediately, grasping the scorpion by the face with its enormous chelicerae and lifting its hapless prey off the ground. The scorpion responded by stinging its attacker squarely between the eyes, killing it instantly. The victorious scorpion then proceeded to make a meal of the solpugid.
- Still, scorpions are heavily preyed upon by a great many animals. The sting of the scorpion appears to be inconsequential to some of these predators. I once had a captive Sceloporous lizard that regularly dined on Centruroides scorpions and appeared to suffer no ill effects from the stingings it received. Nevertheless, the use of the sting as a defensive weapon cannot be underestimated. Why else would some scorpions evolve toxins that appear to be specifically designed for use against vertebrates? Most scorpions that possess these special toxins do not eat vertebrates.
- A third use of the sting is during mating. Males have often been observed stinging females or stroking them with their telsons. It seems likely that some scorpions possess pheromones that might improve female receptivity or provide species identification during the mating ritual. The importance of the sting for this purpose is only just now being realized, but as an example of its potential influence on scorpion evolution, I offer the genus Hadogenes . These scorpions specialize in rock crevices and are markedly flattened. The postabdomen of these scorpions is laterally flattened and is held sideways. Because of the tight spaces in which these scorpions live, the postabdomen would have to be very long in order to be brought to bear in front of the scorpion. The typical overhead attack is not possible. Fortunately the pincers are quite large and powerful enough to subdue prey so that stinging is not necessary. While the postabdomen of the female is not unusually long, and thus cannot be brought to bear in front of the scorpion, that of the male is ridiculously long. Assuming that prey capture and predator defense requirements are similar in both sexes, the best explanation for this dimorphism is that the sting is more important for mating than it is for prey capture or defense.
